Ochtrup lies in the north-western Münsterland, only a short distance from the border with the Netherlands. The landscape around it is typically Münsterland: flat to gently rolling, scattered with isolated farmsteads, small woods and hedged fields. From above, the town forms a compact core with residential areas spreading out in several directions.
The town is known for a long pottery tradition, still remembered in a local museum, and more recently for a large designer outlet centre that draws shoppers from both sides of the border. The older centre around the parish church keeps a tighter, more irregular street pattern than the planned neighbourhoods further out.
