Oegstgeest sits immediately north of Leiden in South Holland, so close that the two share a continuous street network along much of their border. The map captures that position: dense urban blocks to the south, looser residential neighbourhoods in the middle, and open polder land cut by ditches further out, toward the bulb fields and the coast.
Much of the older housing lines leafy streets of villas and terraces built for families who worked in Leiden, including academics from the university. The small Groene Kerkje, one of the oldest churches in the area, stands at the edge of the village, and historic estates such as Endegeest add parkland to the map.
An Oegstgeest map poster shows Dutch water management at a domestic scale: canals running beside streets, ditches marking field edges, ponds in the parks. In black and white, the fine lines of water and road interlock in a way that feels orderly and gentle at once.
