Oliveira do Douro is a parish of Vila Nova de Gaia, on the south bank of the Douro River across from the eastern part of Porto. The river sets the map. A broad curve of water runs along the northern edge. The ground rises steeply from it, and streets climb and wind up the slope to the flatter residential areas above.
This is part of the wider Porto metropolitan area, so the street pattern mixes old and new. Older lanes and quintas sit near the river, while blocks of newer housing and main roads fill the higher ground. Bridges link this bank to Porto, and from the riverside you look straight across the water at the city's eastern districts.
