Oliveira lies in the interior of Minas Gerais, southwest of Belo Horizonte, in a landscape of low hills and pasture. The Fernão Dias highway, which links Belo Horizonte with São Paulo, passes close to town. On the map it is a long, confident line set against the looser pattern of local streets and rural roads.
Like many towns in this part of Minas, Oliveira grew up around a main church and square. Its central streets follow the lie of the land rather than a strict grid, so the older blocks come in slightly different shapes and sizes. Newer neighbourhoods on the edges are more regular, and the map records that gradual growth outward from the centre.
