Orleans is a town in the south of Santa Catarina, set in hilly country between the coastal plain and the Serra Geral escarpment to the west. The town grew from a colonisation scheme in the late nineteenth century, and its name recalls the Orléans family, connected to the Brazilian imperial household through the marriage of Princess Isabel.
On the map, the town occupies a valley floor, with its centre close to the river and streets spreading outward along lower ground. Roads leading into the surrounding hills branch off in several directions, and the relief keeps the built-up area relatively compact. Farmland and patches of forest cover the slopes that rise beyond the edges of town.
European immigrants, among them Italians, Germans and Poles, settled the colony lands of this region, and their influence remains part of local identity.
