Orly lies in the Val-de-Marne, just south of Paris, and its name is known worldwide because of the airport that shares it. On a map, the airport's runways and terminals take up a huge area to the south, a field of straight lines and wide open spaces. The town itself sits to the north and east, a mix of older streets and large post-war housing estates.
The old village core is small, with a church and a few winding streets. Around it, the suburb grew rapidly in the twentieth century, with apartment blocks, parks and schools laid out in open, geometric patterns. Railway lines and major roads cross the area, linking it to Paris and the rest of the region.
