Oviedo is in Seminole County, north-east of Orlando, in low, wet Central Florida countryside. From above, its streets curve around ponds, wetlands and conservation land, while Lake Jesup lies to the north-west. The small historic centre sits at a crossroads, and newer neighbourhoods fan out around it.
The town began as a farming community known for celery and citrus. Today it lies next to the University of Central Florida, whose large campus is visible just to the south. Oviedo is also known for the chickens that have roamed its downtown streets for years, a small local tradition that residents protect with evident fondness.
