Padang Besar sits on Malaysia's northern border with Thailand, and its map is shaped above all by that line. The town is known as a crossing point, both for road traffic and for the railway that links the Malaysian network with southern Thailand, and a Thai town of the same name lies directly on the other side of the frontier.
From above, the settlement is modest in size: a cluster of streets around the station and the border facilities, with roads reaching out toward the rest of northern Malaysia. The surrounding terrain is green and uneven, and low hills and plantations press close to the edges of town, so the built area reads as a small, concentrated patch within a wider rural landscape.
