Paignton sits in the middle of Tor Bay on the south Devon coast, between Torquay to the north and Brixham to the south. From above, its seafront is a long, gentle arc of beaches, and the town climbs from the flat ground near the sand into the rolling hills inland.
The town grew as a Victorian resort once the railway arrived. Its pier dates from the 1870s, and Oldway Mansion was built for the sewing-machine magnate Isaac Singer. Paignton Zoo is one of the best-known in Britain. Heritage steam trains still run from here along the coast to Kingswear, across the river from Dartmouth.
A Paignton map poster follows the soft line of the bay past Preston Sands, Paignton Sands and Goodrington. It shows the short pier and the tight streets of the old centre, and the railway running along behind the beach. It is a seaside town reduced to its outline.
