Palagonia stands in the province of Catania, on the southwestern edge of the broad Plain of Catania. The town rises on higher ground, so its streets follow the slope in stepped rows and bends rather than one even grid. Below and around it, the countryside is divided into orchards, and the pattern of field boundaries and farm tracks is visible for kilometres.
The area is known for citrus, and it is part of the growing district of the Sicilian blood orange. Geologists know the name too: palagonite, an altered volcanic glass, takes its name from Palagonia, where the rock was described in the volcanic deposits near the town. Nearby lies the small Lake of the Palici, tied to an ancient local sanctuary.
