Palencia Map Poster & Print
Palencia stretches along the east bank of the Carrión river in the broad plains of Castile. Seen from above, the historic centre forms a long, narrow shape parallel to the water, with the Calle Mayor running through it from end to end. Riverside parks and islands fill the gaps between bridges, softening the western edge of the city.
The Calle Mayor is lined with arcades, and around it the streets remain short and closely packed. The Gothic cathedral of San Antolín, often called La Bella Desconocida, the unknown beauty, stands near the river side of the old town, its crypt reaching back to Visigothic times. Beyond the centre, newer districts spread outward on a looser, more regular plan.
The Canal de Castilla ends in a dock on the city's edge, and on a hill above the rooftops stands the statue of the Cristo del Otero. A Palencia map poster links these pieces into one clear composition, with river, canal and main street drawn in fine black lines against the open plain around them.
