Palm Springs lies at the western end of the Coachella Valley in Southern California, directly below the steep face of Mount San Jacinto. On a map, the city is mostly a regular grid of streets spreading across the flat valley floor. To the west, the grid stops abruptly where the mountains begin, and canyons cut back into the slopes.
Part of the city lies on the reservation of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, whose land was historically divided in a checkerboard pattern. The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway climbs from the valley up the mountain, and the city is known for its mid-century modern houses. Palm Canyon Drive runs through the centre as the main commercial street.
