Palmas lies in the south of Paraná, near the border with Santa Catarina, on a high plateau at more than a thousand metres above sea level. It is among the coldest towns in Brazil, with frost common in winter and occasional snow, and the landscape around it is one of open grasslands and araucaria pine.
On a map the town appears as a compact grid set on rolling high ground, with streets running fairly regularly across the centre and becoming looser toward the edges. Roads leave the town across wide open land, and the gaps between them are large, reflecting the ranching country and grassland that surround it.
