Palos Hills lies in southwest Cook County, roughly twenty miles from downtown Chicago, on rolling ground shaped by glacial moraines. Unlike the strict grid of the city to the northeast, many of its residential streets curve and loop with the contours of the land, and the map shows a noticeably softer pattern than suburbs laid out on flatter terrain.
The city borders the Palos Forest Preserves, one of the largest areas of woodland in the Chicago region, and these green spaces appear as broad, open areas at the edge of the map. Moraine Valley Community College occupies a large campus within the city, its buildings, parking areas and paths forming a distinct shape among the housing.
