Panihati is part of the Kolkata metropolitan area in North 24 Parganas, on the east bank of the Hooghly River. From above it is a long, narrow town that follows the river. The main road, Barrackpore Trunk Road, runs parallel to the bank, and dense neighbourhoods fill the land between it and the water, with the suburban railway line farther inland.
The town has a long history as a riverside settlement. It is known for a festival associated with the Vaishnava saint Nityananda, when devotees gather by the river to share flattened rice and curd. The ghats and old temples along the bank are the focal points of that tradition.
