Parelhas lies in the Seridó, the semi-arid interior of Rio Grande do Norte near the border with Paraíba. The land around it is caatinga scrub and rocky outcrops, and on the map that dryness shows as open space crossed by winding tracks. The town itself forms a compact grid with a clear centre, the kind of layout shared by many older market towns in the Brazilian northeast.
Water is the key to the place. The Boqueirão reservoir, made by damming a narrow gap in the hills, spreads its branching arms close to town and forms the largest shape on the map.
