Pasir Mas lies in northern Kelantan, on the western bank of the Kelantan River, not far from the Thai border. On a map the town is a small, dense centre of shophouse streets and markets. Around it is a wide patchwork of paddy fields, village roads and irrigation channels, and the river's broad curve marks its eastern edge.
The district includes the border town of Rantau Panjang, one of the main crossings into Thailand. Pasir Mas itself is a market and transport centre for the surrounding villages. Its rail line runs through the northern part of the peninsula.
