Pathanāmthitta is the headquarters of the Kerala district that shares its name, in the midland hills below the Western Ghats. The Achankovil River runs past the town, and its winding course shapes the map. Roads follow ridges and valleys instead of forming a grid, so the street network looks branching and organic.
Outside the centre, the land is covered with rubber plantations and homestead gardens. On the map these appear as a light scatter of houses and lanes rather than dense blocks. The district is best known as home to the Sabarimala temple. Every pilgrimage season, large numbers of devotees pass through the town on their way into the forested hills.
