Patos lies in the interior of Paraíba, in the semi-arid sertão, with caatinga scrub surrounding the city on every side. It is one of the main urban centres of the state's interior. For a wide rural region it serves as a hub for trade and services, drawing people from smaller towns for shopping, schooling and health care.
On the map, the city spreads over fairly level ground. A central grid of blocks sits around the old commercial streets, and newer neighbourhoods reach outward along the main roads. A seasonal watercourse crosses the area, and together with the highway corridors it shapes where the city has grown and where it stops.
The city is often nicknamed Morada do Sol for its strong sunshine and heat.
