It follows lanes and embankments, with houses spread out along narrow roads rather than packed into a single centre. The resulting street pattern is loose and branching, like the veins of a leaf.
This part of Kerala is shaped by canals, streams and paddy land that floods and drains with the seasons. On the map, the waterways and the edges of cultivated fields cut through the settlement.
