Paysandú Map Poster & Print
Paysandú follows the regular Spanish colonial grid, with square blocks stretching inland from the east bank of the Uruguay River. Plaza Constitución anchors the centre, with the basilica facing it, and straight streets lead down towards the port and the riverfront. North of the city, the General Artigas International Bridge crosses to Colón in Argentina, a long line drawn across the water.
In Uruguay the city is remembered for the siege of 1864 and 1865, when its defenders held out for weeks before it fell. The episode earned it the name Heroica Paysandú. Today it is one of the larger cities of the interior, with an industrial past in beer, leather and sugar. Its beer week draws visitors every Easter.
A Paysandú map poster captures the tension between the disciplined grid and the soft, uneven edge of the river, with its islands, inlets and wooded banks. Streams running into the Uruguay break up the grid at the city's margins. The bridge adds one clear line reaching across to the Argentine shore, which gives the whole composition a sense of direction.

Opened in the 1970s, the international bridge links Paysandú with Colón. On the map it is a single confident stroke over the broad river.
