Péhonko is a commune in Benin's Atakora department, in the north-west of the country. The land here is savanna, with open woodland, farmland and scattered villages. The town at the centre of the commune is small, and on the map it appears as a modest cluster of streets gathered around a main road.
Outside the centre, the pattern changes quickly. Tracks branch out to hamlets and fields, family compounds sit apart from one another, and seasonal streams leave faint lines across the land. The effect on paper is a small focal point of density surrounded by a wide, lightly marked landscape.
