Peravurani is a town in Thanjavur district, on the southern side of the Kaveri delta, a flat country of fields, tanks and irrigation channels. From above, the town is a compact knot of streets where several country roads meet. Beyond that knot the built-up area thins quickly, and the map fills with the fine lines of field boundaries and water channels.
The land here is low and agricultural, with rice paddies and coconut plantations covering much of the surrounding area, and the Bay of Bengal coast lies not far to the east. On a Peravurani map poster that setting appears as open space around a dense centre, crossed by straight roads heading out toward neighbouring towns and villages.
Temple tanks and small water bodies are a common feature of delta towns, and they give the plan of Peravurani its occasional pale squares and ovals.
