Pesqueira lies in the agreste of Pernambuco, the transition zone between the humid coast and the dry sertão. The town sits on uneven ground near the Serra do Ororubá, and from above it forms an elongated cluster of streets following the lower land, with hills and ridges rising around it.
The centre shows a denser grid of streets and squares, typical of towns in the Brazilian interior, with churches and public buildings at its core. Main roads leave the town toward the coast and the interior, while the built-up area loosens quickly into farmland, dry scrub and hills. The terrain gives the map an irregular, organic outline.
Pesqueira was known in the twentieth century for its food-processing industry, particularly sweets and tomato products. The surrounding hills are home to the Xukuru people, whose territory lies in the Serra do Ororubá.
