Phúc Yên lies north-west of Hanoi, close to Nội Bài International Airport, and since Vietnam's 2025 administrative reorganisation it has been part of Phú Thọ province. On a map it combines two landscapes. The flat southern area holds streets, rice fields and industrial zones, and the northern area rises into wooded hills.
Among those hills lies Đại Lải Lake, a large reservoir with an irregular, many-armed shoreline that stands out clearly against the surrounding forest. Further north, the land climbs towards the Tam Đảo range, and the roads thin out into a few winding lines.
The Hanoi–Lào Cai railway passes through town, and factories line the main roads out towards the capital, while the older core keeps a denser mesh of small streets.
