Piaçabuçu lies on the Alagoas bank of the São Francisco river, close to where Brazil's great north-eastern river reaches the Atlantic. The map is dominated by water. The broad river channel runs past the town, and sandbanks, islands and mangrove-lined creeks split it up as it nears the sea.
The town sits in a compact grid along the riverbank. Its streets run down to the water, and small boats connect it with communities up and down the river. Downstream toward the coast, the land becomes a protected area of wide dunes and beaches, one of the most distinctive landscapes in the region.
