Pigüé is a town in the southwest of Buenos Aires Province, the head town of Saavedra Partido, set among the open grasslands of the pampas with low sierras on the horizon. From above, it shows the classic plan of an Argentine town: a regular grid of square blocks around a central plaza. The streets stop abruptly where the fields begin.
The town is known for its French origins. It was founded in the 1880s by settlers from the Aveyron region of France, and that heritage remains part of local identity and celebrations today. The railway line crossing the plain adds a diagonal counterpoint to the grid.
