Pinhão takes its name from the edible seed of the araucaria, the tall candelabra-shaped pine that once covered much of Paraná's southern plateau. The town sits on that high ground in the centre of the state. It is surrounded by farmland, forestry plots and the deep river valleys typical of the region.
