Piri lies in Bengo Province in northwestern Angola, inland from the Atlantic coast and the capital, Luanda. The province is a region of river valleys, rolling hills and farmland, and small towns such as Piri serve as local centres for the surrounding countryside. On a map, the settlement appears as a modest group of streets set among open land.
Beyond the built-up area, roads and dirt tracks lead out through the hills to neighbouring villages and farms. Watercourses cut through the terrain, shaping the directions the roads can take. Compared with the dense grid of Luanda, the layout here is loose and irregular, following the landscape more than any formal plan.
