Piriyāpatna lies in the west of Mysuru district in Karnataka, on the plateau between Mysuru and the hills of Kodagu. From above, it is a compact town gathered along its main road, with lanes spreading out into residential blocks. Irrigation tanks and fields surround it, and the green, wooded country toward the Western Ghats begins further west.
The Piriyāpatna map poster shows that familiar Deccan pattern: a clear main axis, an older, denser centre, and water bodies that shape the edge of the settlement. Farm roads radiate out to nearby villages, and the land between them is divided into irregular plots. The result is quiet and balanced, with the town clearly readable against its rural setting.
The taluk is also known for the Tibetan settlements at Bylakuppe, established in the 1960s and among the largest in India, a short distance away.
