Pithāpuram lies on the coastal plain of Andhra Pradesh, a short distance from Kakinada and the Bay of Bengal. The land is almost perfectly flat, part of the wider Godavari delta. From above, the town is a dense web of lanes and roads, surrounded by paddy fields cut into neat rectangles by irrigation canals and field boundaries.
The town is an important pilgrimage centre. The Kukkuteswara Swamy temple complex, with the Puruhutika shrine, is counted among the Shakti Peethas. Pithāpuram is also revered as the birthplace of Sripada Sri Vallabha, venerated in the Dattatreya tradition.
