Playa del Carmen is one of the most orderly places on the Riviera Maya when seen from above. Its centre is a grid of numbered calles running down to the sea and avenues running parallel to the beach, so the map looks like graph paper meeting a long, almost straight coastline.
Quinta Avenida, or Fifth Avenue, is the town's pedestrian spine. It runs a block inland from the sand, lined with shops and restaurants. Ferries leave from the waterfront for Cozumel, the island visible across the channel. The town grew from a small fishing settlement into a major resort within a few decades.
