Plettenberg lies in the Sauerland, a hilly, heavily wooded region of North Rhine-Westphalia, and its map is shaped entirely by valleys. The river Lenne runs through the area, and smaller streams join it here, so the town extends along several narrow valley floors rather than forming a single round centre.
Streets, railway and roads crowd into the flat ground beside the water, while the surrounding hillsides remain largely forested. The result on paper is a branching, finger-like pattern of settlement set against wide dark areas of woodland, with the town centre sitting close to where the valleys converge.
