Pokok Sena is a district and small town in Kedah, north-east of the state capital, Alor Setar. It lies on the edge of the broad lowland that has made Kedah known as Malaysia's rice bowl. From above, the country is a patchwork of flat paddy land and kampung settlements strung along roads and waterways. Toward the east the ground rises into wooded hills.
The town centre is modest: a few intersecting streets, shophouses, schools and mosques. Most of the district's built form is spread out. Villages follow roads and irrigation channels, and houses sit in lines with their orchards and gardens behind them. The mix of straight drainage lines and gently curving village roads gives the map a calm rhythm, more rural than urban.
