Ponnāni lies on the Malabar coast of Kerala, where the Bharathapuzha, the state's second-longest river, reaches the Arabian Sea. The map shows a long straight coastline, the wide estuary and a town spread along a narrow strip of land between river, backwaters and sea. Coconut groves and small lanes fill the spaces between.
Ponnāni has been a port for centuries and is known as a historic centre of Islamic learning in Kerala, sometimes called the Mecca of Kerala. Its Valiya Juma Masjid is one of the region's best-known mosques. Fishing boats and the harbour remain part of the town's daily life.
