Pontal lies in the north of São Paulo state, in the agricultural region around Ribeirão Preto. On a map the town is a neat, mostly regular grid of blocks, with a central square near its heart and newer neighbourhoods added on the edges in the same orderly manner. Around it the land opens into wide farmland, crossed by rural roads and water courses.
Sugarcane dominates this part of the state, and the fields around Pontal shape the landscape as much as the town itself. Seen from above, cultivated land forms large even parcels, and roads link the town to mills and to neighbouring municipalities. The contrast between the dense grid and the open agricultural space is the defining feature of the map.
