Ponteareas lies in the province of Pontevedra in southern Galicia, in the Condado area near the Portuguese border and inland from Vigo. The town grew beside the river Tea, and the map shows the water running along its edge with the centre rising above it. Beyond the core, streets thin out into scattered parishes and the green farmland typical of rural Galicia.
Ponteareas is best known for its Corpus Christi celebrations, when residents cover the streets with intricate carpets made of flowers, a tradition recognised as a festival of international tourist interest. The river Tea is valued for its natural banks and riverside paths, and bridges have long been part of the town's identity, as its name suggests.
