Portland sits on a stretch of land in San Patricio County, with Nueces Bay to the south and Corpus Christi Bay to the east. Across the water lies Corpus Christi, and a highway causeway and bridge link the two. The city grew as a residential community for the wider bay area, and its shoreline is a large part of its identity.
The map shows two textures side by side. Inland, suburban streets curve into cul-de-sacs and looping residential crescents, broken up by larger commercial strips along the highway. On the water side, the shoreline runs in a long, gentle curve, and the causeway sets off across the bay as a thin, straight line.
