Porto da Folha is in the far north of Sergipe, in the semi-arid backlands close to the border with Alagoas. The town itself sits inland. Its streets gather around a central square and church, then thin out into roads that lead across open, dry land. On a map the center is compact, and the outlying streets fan out unevenly in the way of many sertão towns.
The municipality reaches north to the São Francisco River, one of Brazil's great waterways. At a wider framing the river adds a broad, sweeping line and turns what would otherwise be an inland scene into a composition with real water in it. Riverside communities along its bank appear as small clusters linked to the town by rural roads.
