Pottuvil lies on the east coast of Sri Lanka, in Ampara District, where the coastal road runs between the Indian Ocean and a series of lagoons. On a map, the town is framed by water: a long sandy shoreline to the east and a lagoon lined with mangroves on its inland side.
The town itself is a network of streets around a main road running roughly north to south along the coast. Short lanes branch toward the beach and toward paddy fields inland. The shape is long and narrow, following the strip of dry land between sea and lagoon.
Just to the south lies Arugam Bay, known internationally as one of the best surfing spots in Asia. A Pottuvil map poster can show both, the town and the curve of the bay, a stretch of coast familiar to local families and to travellers who come for the waves.
