Provo lies in Utah Valley, on the flat land between the steep western face of the Wasatch Range and the broad expanse of Utah Lake. Like many Utah towns, it is laid out as a grid of wide, numbered streets counted from a central point. Center Street and University Avenue form the main axes. On a map the regularity is striking, and the mountains frame it on the east.
Brigham Young University occupies higher ground in the northeast of the city. On the mountainside above it, a large white block Y is visible from much of the valley. The Provo River comes down through Provo Canyon, crosses the city in a winding green corridor and runs out to the lake. It adds one organic line to an otherwise geometric plan.
West of the centre the grid loosens into farmland, marsh and the shore of Utah Lake, one of the largest freshwater lakes in the western United States. A Provo map poster brings together the three layers of the city: lake, grid and mountains. The result feels balanced and calm.
