Puerto Asís lies on the left bank of the Putumayo River in southern Colombia, where the foothills of the Andes give way to the Amazon lowlands. The town's streets form a mostly regular grid set back from the riverbank. Beyond it, the river continues in wide meanders through forest and farmland.
As its name suggests, the town grew up as a port, and river traffic on the Putumayo has long connected it to settlements downstream. Further along its course, the river forms part of Colombia's border with Ecuador and Peru. The region has also been shaped by oil and cattle ranching.
