Puerto Madryn sits on the western shore of the Golfo Nuevo in Chubut province, in Argentine Patagonia. From above, the city follows the curve of the bay. A long coastal avenue runs along the beach, the street grid climbs gently inland from it, and two long piers stretch far into the water. Beyond the last blocks, the dry Patagonian steppe begins almost at once.
The city dates back to 1865, when Welsh settlers arrived on the ship Mimosa and landed on this shore. Today it is best known as the gateway to Península Valdés, and southern right whales come into the Golfo Nuevo each winter and spring. In monochrome, the composition is strikingly clear. The smooth arc of the coast holds a regular city on one side and open water on the other, and the piers point out into the gulf like fine lines. The empty steppe gives the rest of the frame a sense of distance.
