Puerto Rico is a municipality in the department of Caquetá in southern Colombia, where the eastern slopes of the Andes flatten into the Amazonian lowlands. As its name suggests, it grew as a river port. The waterway beside it was for a long time the main route for people and goods in this part of the country.
The urban area is small and fairly regular. On a map it shows as a grid of blocks on the riverbank, with a few roads leading out across open, rolling country. Around the town, pasture and forest patches alternate, and many streams wind through the land toward larger rivers.
