Püttlingen lies in the Köllertal, a valley just northwest of Saarbrücken in the Saarland. The town follows the valley floor, where the main road and the Köllerbach stream run side by side. From there, residential streets climb the slopes on both sides, forming ladders and loops that stop where the forest begins.
The present town brings together several villages that grew toward each other, including Köllerbach, which merged with Püttlingen in the 1970s. The map shows this origin clearly. There are several small centres rather than one, joined by the valley road and separated by patches of green and wooded ridges.
Coal mining shaped Püttlingen for generations, as it did much of the Saarland, and the settlement pattern still reflects the miners' housing that spread along the hillsides.
