Purwodadi is the administrative centre of Grobogan Regency. It lies in the broad agricultural lowland of Central Java, between the hills of the north and the plains that stretch toward the Solo region. On a map the town appears as a compact grid of streets around its civic and market centre, with long village roads branching out across the surrounding farmland.
The land around Purwodadi is mostly flat and heavily cultivated. At poster scale the rice fields show as open space, broken by clusters of kampung settlements, irrigation lines and small rivers.
