Puttankulam lies in southern Kerala, in the Kollam area, in a landscape where town and countryside blend with little clear boundary. From above, it has no grid and no single dense core. Instead, narrow roads and lanes wander between clusters of houses, thick tree cover and small bodies of water, following the gentle rise and fall of the ground.
The name contains kulam, the Malayalam word for a pond or tank, and water is always close in this part of the state: household ponds, paddy fields and, further west, the backwaters and the Arabian Sea coast.
