Puttūr is a town in Dakshina Kannada district, inland from Mangaluru in the foothills of the Western Ghats. The land here is rarely flat, and the map shows it: roads follow ridges and valleys, curving rather than running straight, and the town spreads along them in irregular clusters instead of an ordered grid.
It is a trading centre for the surrounding plantation country, where areca nut, rubber, coconut and pepper are widely grown. The Mahalingeshwara Temple is the town's best-known landmark, and its annual festival is a major event in the region. The Kumaradhara and Netravati rivers meet a short distance to the north.
