Qaraçuxur is a settlement in the Surakhani district of Baku, on the Absheron Peninsula east of the city centre. Its map is typical of this part of the capital: residential streets and apartment blocks sit alongside industrial land, rail lines and the open, worked ground of oil extraction that has shaped the peninsula for more than a century.
Absheron is one of the oldest oil-producing areas in the world, and the landscape around Qaraçuxur still carries that history in the form of well sites, pipelines and service roads.
