Qarāwul lies in Kunduz Province in northern Afghanistan, on the low, level country that stretches toward the Amu Darya, the river that marks the border with Tajikistan. The town is a modest cluster of streets and compounds surrounded by farmland, and from above the pattern of fields and irrigation channels is as prominent as the roads themselves.
The Kunduz region is among Afghanistan's most productive agricultural areas, watered by rivers flowing down from the mountains to the south and east. Towns like Qarāwul serve as local markets for the farming communities around them, linked by roads running across the plain.
